Football Insider has been informed by sources that Leeds United had cancelled their agreement to sign Cheikhou Kouyate as a free agent.
Leeds conducted discussions with the camp of the former West Ham, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace midfielder, but they presently have no plans to continue those talks.
This is in response to Football Insider’s October 11 report, which stated that the Elland Road team was considering whether to extend a contract offer to the 34-year-old.
Daniel Farke’s team had to weigh their options after important midfield players Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu sustained injuries. Both players are anticipated to be out until the new year.
The Leeds management was intrigued by Kouyate’s availability as a seasoned leader to bolster their midfield, but they have since chosen not to pursue a deal.
Cheikhou Kouyate’s deal to Leeds United is decided following fresh negotiations.
After talks started between the two sides, Kouyate was once thought to be likely to transfer to Leeds, but things did not go as planned.During his tenures at Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, and West Ham, the 34-year-old made 324 appearances; yet, he only made 14 appearances for Forest in their most recent game.
When his contract expired, he was free to depart City Ground as they were trying to reduce their payroll costs. He is still available for a free transfer.
The midfielder’s expertise and familiarity with both English football and the Premier League were thought to be a benefit to Farke’s youthful team.
But with so many other choices available at Elland Road, the desire to sign the midfield player has waned.
Since Ampadu and Gruev are expected to be sidelined until January, Leeds management will keep evaluating the best short-term solutions to assist Farke’s squad.
To create an immediate impact on the main team, this can involve using their under-21 team or perhaps calling up one of their players who is currently on loan.
